A Perspective of Spanish Media

We have many options to watch Spanish television, listening radio or read newspapers in the United States. Many television stations are available in different regions in the country; for example: Univision, Telefuture, Telemundo, Mun2, Galavision and others are increasing different programming gain the attention of immigrants and citizens.

The Hispanic market is another interesting option for companies to advertise products and services on these specific channels. In the United States, we have at least 50 million Hispanics as a potential market for different American companies. According   to Christopher Goodwin a journalist from The observer  “Most of the top-rated shows on Spanish-language television are telenovelas - soap operas - such as Sin Tetas No Hay ParaĆso (Without Breasts There Is No Paradise) and Las Tontas No Van al Cielo (Dumb Girls Don't Go to Heaven), imported from Mexico and Colombia”.

However, soap operas are not main programming available for Hispanics in the United States. News and sports are also very attractive alternatives to introduce audiences to Latino television. In 2010 Univision had the exclusive coverage for the FIFA World Cup (Soccer) from South Africa. The company had high ratings (around of 10 million people in the United States watching the games) and received income from advertising and commercials. I think that Spanish television is a good choice for radio, newspaper and online entertainment.

My native language is Spanish and sometimes when I am watching Spanish television, I feel very disappointed because some communicators use poor grammar. Their use of adverb, adjectives, and superlatives is done without correct grammar. I know that these channels are in an English country but if they want to speak in Spanish they should do so correctly.

Many companies are bringing native Hispanics with English as second language to improve the quality of the programs in order to attract more Hispanic viewers. Many professionals migrate from Latino countries and incorporate their knowledge and skills to work in television, radio and other electronic communications.  One good example is a Colombian communicator Felix de Bedout who worked on television and radio in Colombia and immigrated to the United States where  he joined Univision’s program “Despierta America” (Wake up America). CNN in Spanish has also hired many important social communicators such as Alejandra Oraa from Venezuela, Angela Patricia Janiot from Colombian Lorena Ochoa from Mexico, Ana Maria Luengo from Spain.

Technicians, engineers, and designers in the United States, Canada, and other countries where Hispanic television is aired are needed in order to interpret information from English to Spanish and Spanish to English to all areas of programming. Communication would be enhanced because these professionals understand both languages and could help these companies to incorporate better alternatives to increase income and acceptation from the customers.

Immigrants and Online Jobs

Today, many people use the Internet to search for new jobs options or to move from one country to another; Internet is used by many professional immigrants to obtain other options in different countries where more opportunities and better payments are available. Many job hunting websites are available online to help professional immigrants to reach their dreams. Countries such as Canada, the United State, Australia, and Europe are looking for trained professional immigrants with special qualifications to fill up many positions. Furthermore, many countries have special trades to interchange professionals, and take advantage to cover some specific position in Engineering, Medicine, and more. According to the U.S. department of State NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) a trade where Mexico, Canada and the United States have a special economic and trade agreements to allow nonimmigrant professionals to obtain jobs in the U.S. through NAFT professionals. Other countries need professional immigrants to increase their demographic population. Australia has a special program for professional and other skilled immigrates to be selected as permanent residents.

No matter what country you are from anyone can access this information online and search to see his or her options. Many professional immigration visas are available in different countries; however, some people don’t have the characteristics, skills or abilities that they are looking for and the visas are not accepted. Another option is to get a sponsor company to work in another country. Getting a job is difficult since a lot of companies have thousands of applicants on their databases and the chance of being hired is very unlikely. Although, you can apply online and search for information in many websites, it is very important to start learning another language such as English or French, to understand the culture in the country where the person wants to migrate, and understand all the requirements to be prepared for the job they are wanting.

The Internet is a good tool to search for a job as a professional immigrant; however, this online process is not an easy and could be very dangerous in some cases. There are some websites that request money claiming that they are better than other websites but instead are just stealing the money of the applicant or using the online information to involve them in sex trafficking or dangerous and low paying jobs. From the examples shown, it is very important to check the information on the authorized governments’ websites and only use the companies that are recommended by them.   Migrating to another country is a very exciting journey. However, it can be difficult and very dangerous if one is not cautious. The Internet is an important way to get information on how to immigrate as a professional to any country in the world. Remember to use the information that was stated to understand the process of immigrating and never give money or personal information to unsecure websites. Once completing these steps it is then one step closer to being able to experience a new culture and way of life.
